Transformers in Power Systems: Principle, Structure, Classification and Functions

As one of the most critical and indispensable pieces of equipment in power grid systems, power transformers serve as the core hub for electric energy conversion and transmission. Visible and widely installed in substations, industrial plants and urban power distribution networks, transformers feature a mature working principle yet require standardized maintenance to ensure long-term stable performance. Compared with conventional power transmission accessories such as cables, transformers undertake more critical grid regulation tasks. If the entire power grid is regarded as an interconnected power network, transformers act as the core connection nodes that link power generation, transmission and terminal power consumption. This article systematically introduces the working principle, basic composition, core functions and mainstream structural types of power transformers.

1. Working Principle of Power Transformers

Transformers realize AC voltage conversion and electric energy transmission based on the electromagnetic induction principle. The basic structure consists of two insulated coil windings: a primary winding and a secondary winding. When alternating current is injected into the primary winding, a continuously alternating magnetic field is generated inside the iron core. The changing magnetic flux passes through the secondary winding and induces stable alternating voltage on the secondary side.

The voltage conversion ratio of the transformer strictly corresponds to the turn ratio of the primary and secondary coils. Adjusting the number of winding turns can accurately change the output voltage level. For instance, if the primary winding has 500 turns and the secondary winding has 250 turns, an input voltage of 220V on the primary side will be stably converted to an output voltage of 110V on the secondary side.

According to the voltage conversion mode, transformers are divided into two categories: step-down transformers and step-up transformers. When the primary winding has fewer turns than the secondary winding, the equipment boosts the low input voltage to a high level, realizing step-up power transmission; conversely, it reduces high voltage to low voltage for terminal power distribution.

2. Basic Structure and Core Components

The iron core and winding assembly constitute the two core components of a transformer, determining its electromagnetic performance, operating efficiency and structural stability. The iron core acts as a high-efficiency magnetic conduction path to concentrate magnetic flux and reduce magnetic leakage loss. The windings are insulated conductive coils responsible for current carrying and electromagnetic energy conversion. The winding connected to the power input side is defined as the primary winding, while the winding connected to the load terminal is the secondary winding.

Based on different core design structures, power transformers are mainly divided into two types:

Core-Type Structure: Windings are evenly wound on the outer side of the iron core. This structural design features simple manufacturing process, convenient internal insulation treatment and high cost performance. It is the most mainstream structure for industrial and civil power distribution transformers and widely adopted in various conventional power supply scenarios.

Shell-Type Structure: The iron core wraps the outer layer of the windings in an enclosed form. This structure boasts extremely high mechanical strength and strong impact resistance, but requires more raw materials and complex processing procedures. It is mainly applied to special scenarios such as precision low-voltage small transformers and special industrial power supply equipment.

3. Core Functions of Transformers

Transformers undertake three essential core functions in power system operation, supporting efficient, safe and stable power transmission and distribution:

Voltage Conversion: This is the most fundamental function of a transformer. Electric energy generated by power plants is boosted to high voltage for long-distance transmission to reduce line loss; after being delivered to the power distribution area, the voltage is stepped down stage by stage to meet the low-voltage power demand of industrial production, commercial buildings and residential users.

Current Matching: In accordance with the law of power conservation, voltage conversion is accompanied by synchronous current adjustment. The transformer realizes automatic matching of transmission current, ensuring stable power output and safe current carrying of lines and equipment.

Electrical Isolation & Safety Protection: The insulation isolation design between primary and secondary windings physically separates the user-side power distribution system from the high-voltage main grid. In case of grid failure, voltage surge or line abnormality, it can effectively isolate faults, prevent fault diffusion and provide reliable safety barriers for terminal equipment and power consumption personnel.
